Komodo National Park is a national park in Indonesia located within the Lesser Sunda Islands in the border region between the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The park includes the three larger islands Komodo, Padar and Rinca, and 26 smaller ones with a total area of 1,733 km2.
The national park was founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard. In 1991 the national park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Komodo National Park has been selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
Komodo islands is also a part of the Coral Triangle, which contains some of the richest marine biodiversity on Earth.
DESTINATION
RINCA ISLAND
This island is one of the three largest islands included in Komodo National Park. The island is famous for Komodo dragons, giant lizards that can measure up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long. Rinca is also populated with many other species such as wild pigs, buffalos and many birds. Rinca has beautiful sceneries with white beaches, mangroves, savannas and blue waters. During the dry season, these savannas and hills have dried grasses.
KELOR ISLAND
Kelor island is small island with white sandy beach, magnificent sea garden and colorful tropical fishes. Challenge yourself for some hill trekking in Kelor Island and do not forget to swim around the island who has a very crystal clear water.
PADAR ISLAND
Padar is a small island located between Komodo and Rinca islands within Komodo archipelago. Padar has dry climate, with only bushes and grassland vegetation covering the island, creating savanna hills. Padar island has four deep bays with beaches in different colors, most of them are white sands, while some beaches has grey and pink sands. The sea surrounding the island has several sites popular for scuba diving and snorkeling.
KOMODO ISLAND
Komodo Island has the rugged habitat of the 3 m-long Komodo dragon monitor lizard. Komodo National Park covers the entire region and is home to more than 4,000 dragons, and is made up of rusty-red volcanic hills, savannah and forests. Its surrounding waters of seagrass beds, mangrove shrub-lands and coral reefs are famous for diving.
KANAWA ISLAND
The island of Kanawa has two bulging hills with fantastic panorama from its hilltop. Covering only 32-hectare or less than 80-acre land, the island is a hideout from the hidden, yet so close to the burgeoning harbor of Labuan Bajo. This island is fringed with a bed of coral reefs teeming with colorful fish all around. Its turquoise water is exceptionally calm and clear.
PINK BEACH
Pink Beach, or Pantai Merah, as it is aptly named, is one of seven pink beaches on the planet, and is just one of the many amazing features of Komodo Island that make it truly a Natural Wonder of Nature. This exceptional beach gets its striking color from microscopic animals called Foraminifera, which produce a red pigment on the coral reefs. The corals of the Pink Beach’s underwater gardens are in excellent condition, with hundreds of species of both soft and hard corals, and thousands of species of fish.
TAKA MAKASSAR
Taka Makassar is located near to Komodo Island and Manta Point. This island is a worthy destination, especially for snorkeling.
BATU CERMIN CAVE
Hence the cave’s name, Batu Cermin, which means ‘mirror rock’ in Indonesian. Located only 4 kilometers from central Labuan Bajo. Batu Cermin cave is set within an impressive prominent rock formation near Labuan Bajo. Through a hole in the cave, rays of light find their way into the cave’s inside walls where they perform a spectacular show of reflected sunlight. This fascinating effect is caused by some slick, mirror-like rock surfaces that reflect the light.
