OVERLAND FLORES
The name Flores was given by the Portuguese, from Cabo de Flores. Flores is the most fascinating and beautiful island. The most famous tourist attraction in Flores are:
  • The 1,639-metre-high (5,377-foot) Kelimutu volcano which containing three colored lakes, located in the district of Ende close to the town of Moni, although you can also visit Inierie vulcano near Bajawa town. These crater lakes are in the caldera of a volcano, and fed by a volcanic gas source, resulting in highly acidic water. The colored lakes change colors on an irregular basis, depending on the oxidation state of the lake from bright red through green and blue.
  • There are snorkeling and diving locations along the north coast of Flores, most notably Maumere and Riung.
  • Labuan Bajo town located on the western tip is often used by tourists as a base to visit Komodo and Rinca islands. Labuan bajo also attracts scuba divers, as whale sharks inhabit the waters around Labuan bajo.
  • The Luba and Bena villages include traditional houses in Flores, Bena is also noted for its Stone Age megaliths.
  • Larantuka, on the isle's eastern end, is known for its Holy Week festivals.

    MAUMERE
    Maumere is blessed with a picturesque landscape of hills and mountain and crystal clear aquamarine colored ocean. Maumere being located at the narrowest section of this long island, when one stands at Koting village near the town of Nita, One will have a vantage view to as far as the Flores Sea to the north and the Savu Sea by the Indian Ocean in its southern horizon. Maumere is also the hopping off point to climb to the Tri-Coloured Lakes on Mt. Kelimutu located on the route to Ende.

    Visit the village of Sikka, some 30 km from Maumere, center of the legendary Flores hand-woven clothes. On request, visitors can watch, the complete intricate process of ikat-weaving, including dying the threats with natural colors. Another village known for its weaving is Watublapi, which distinguishes itself by the use of symbolic motifs of animals such as lizards, horses, birds, and geometrical patterns.
    ENDE
    Ende is located on the southern coast of Flores Island. Ende was the site of a kingdom that existed around the end of 18th century. The people of the area therefore known as Lio-Ende people. The well-known tourist spot of Mount Kelimutu with three coloured volcanic lakes is about 50 km to the east of Ende.
    LAKE KELIMUTU
    There are three lakes on the mountain sharing the same name, Kelimutu, meaning the boiling lake. Lake Kelimutu is part of the Kelimutu National Park, presenting a highly aesthetic value and surreal experience. The national park's highest point is 5,679 feet at Mt Kelibara (1,731 meters), and 5,544 feet high (1,690 meters) at Mt Kelimutu.
    BAJAWA
    This charming medium-sized town known for its rich culture and well-preserved traditional villages is situated 1,200 metres above sea level. Surrounded by volcanoes. You may try the famous Flores Coffee in Bajawa.
    BENA VILLAGE
    Bena, a community that is situated about 16km from Bajawa at the foot of Mount Inerie, is the most famous and also most visited village in the Ngada district. With its impressive stone formations and ancestral shrines, as well as traditional houses, Bena has turned into a signpost for Ngada culture. The village consists of two parallel rows of traditional, high thatch-roofed houses. Highly visible in the center of the village are ngadhu and bhaga, pairs of shrines one for each clan of the village representing the clan's ancestors. The ngadhu symbolizes fierceness and virility.Bena offers an awesome sight, are the megalithic formations in the village center. Megaliths are a means to connect with the supernatural realm and to communicate with the ancestors, often by animal sacrifice.
    RIUNG
    Riung is a fishing village located in the northern coast of Flores, Indonesia and mostly known as the gateway for the 17 Islands National Park (Tujuh Blas Pulau). The village itself is sparsely populated, with wide streets lined with coconut trees and friendly locals.
    RUTENG
    Ruteng, the capital of the Manggarai district, is located at the foot of a high mountain range and in the center of a complicated network of valleys, which flow into the largest rice-producing areas of Flores. Long-standing traditions are still very much present in Ruteng, e.g. Caci: a whip fight which is an important element of traditional ceremonies. It is therefore often performed during the marriage of the wealthier and more influential Manggaraians.
    WAE REBO
    Wae Rebo is a small, very out of the way village. Located some 1,100 meters above sea level, where the air is cool and the village completely surrounded by panoramic mountains and the dense Todo forest. This tropical forest is rich in vegetation, where you will find orchids, different types of ferns and hear the chirping of many songbirds.
    BATU CERMIN CAVE
    Hence the cave name, Batu Cermin, which means "mirror rock" in Indonesian. Located only 4 kilometers from central Labuan Bajo. Batu Cermin cave is set within an impressive prominent rock formation near Labuan Bajo. Through a hole in the cave, rays of light find their way into the cave’s inside walls where they perform a spectacular show of reflected sunlight. This fascinating effect is caused by some slick, mirror-like rock surfaces that reflect the light.
    KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
    Komodo National Park is a national park in Indonesia located within the Lesser Sunda Islands in the border region between the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The park includes the three larger islands Komodo, Padar and Rinca and some small island like Kelor, Sebayur, Bidadari, and Kanawa. The park is also as a place for komodo flores tour.
